The MBS Turkey Challenge

The MBS Turkey Challenge

Yesterday Mike competed in the MBS Turkey Challenge. He signed up for the elite division and despite an injury at the end of the day, did a great job. I was there all day (it was a long one!) and I was proud to cheer him on.

The challenge consisted of 3 parts:
  1. Run a 5 k. Mike kicked ass on this, coming in 12/24 elites and beating most of the guys in the open division too.
  2. The CrossFit Total. This is 3 lifts, back squat, press, and deadlift, with 3 attempts each. Mike got solid numbers for both the back squat and press and set a 15 pound PR for deadlift.
  3. The Turkey WOD:
15 ground to overhead 115#
10 burpee wall jumps
5 rope climbs
10 burpee wall jumps
15 ground to overhead 115#

Mike flew through the ground to overhead, was on a good pace, but fell off the rope on his first rope climb and twisted his ankle. He still gutted through 2 more rope climbs before the 10 minute time limit elapsed. He wasn't the only DNF on this workout and still managed to beat several people in the elite division.
It's always fun to go to CF competitions, and for once it was kind of nice to volunteer and cheer from the sidelines and have a break from the pressure of competing. Not only did Mike get to compete, he made a new friend.

Holy cow regarding the rope climb. They worked that into one of the final wods at the games in California this summer. It was crazy to watch, I was very concerned for the atheletes saftey. Glad he made it through but sorry to hear about his ankle. Have fun in Nappa. Sounds like a good trip in honor of Thanksgiving. Hope Mike is feeling better. Please send my regards!
